The American Civil War Center, 490 Tredegar Street. The results of a nine-year effort to create a new kind of Civil War museum: one that tells Union, Confederate and black stories in one place. A central mission of the center is to bring not only a new understanding of the war, but to foster and promote racial healing. The center is at the Tredegar Iron Works, the 8.3-acre National Historic Landmark along the north bank of the James River and across the street from Brown’s Island. Tredegar resonates with its own Civil War history, because it once was the industrial heart of the Confederacy. Richmond, of course, was the capital of the Confederacy. The center shares the grounds of Tredegar with the Richmond National Battlefield Parks Civil War Visitor Center.
