Shopping in Richmond’s Carytown is always a marvelous adventure.

Every summer, thousands of Richmonders flock to the annual Carytown Watermelon Festival for a day of music, summer sales and watermelon. Arts and crafts, sidewalk sales and plenty of free events and music along 10 stages set the atmosphere for the event. Richmonders and visitors can also find food from Carytown area eateries either in the restaurants or available from the many street vendors.

Opened in 1928, the Byrd Theatre is one of the movie palaces that sprang up around the country in the 1920s. Built when lavish architectural decoration was still relatively inexpensive, these glittering confections vied with one another to attract and dazzle cinemagoers.
