Chimborazo Medical Museum

In the video at left, take a tour of the Chimborazo Medical Museum in historic Church Hill. The museum stands at the site of the Civil War’s famous Chimborazo Hospital. Between October 1861 and April 1865 more than 77,000 soldiers received treatment at this facility, the largest Confederate hospital.

The museum is located at Chimborazo Park. It includes, Liberty, an 8½-foot likeness of the Statue of Liberty, donated by the Boy Scouts of America in 1951. Close by is the Powhatan Stone, which was removed from and now overlooks “Powhatan Seat,” a royal residence of King Powhatan when Capt. John Smith established the first permanent English settlement in 1607.

Chimborazo Medical Museum, 3215 E. Broad Street. One of the 12 Civil War sites protected by Richmond National Battlefield Park around the city of Richmond.

The museum stands at the site of the Civil War’s famous Chimborazo Hospital. Between October 1861 and April 1865 more than 77,000 soldiers received treatment at this facility, the largest Confederate hospital. The medical museum tells the story of those patients and the hospital and physicians that cared for them. Using artifacts, uniforms and documents, the exhibits describe the state of medicine in 1860. In highlights the care of wounded and sick soldiers on the battlefields, and in the many large centralized Richmond hospitals like Chimborazo.

From 1959 to 2000 Chimborazo housed the park’s main visitor center, which was moved in June 2000 to the Tredegar Iron Works. Since then, the building has been renovated with new museum exhibits containing more than 100 objects.
