Hanover Tavern: 13181 Courthouse Road, Hanover County on U.S. 301, across from historic Hanover Courthouse. Historic landmark, with the earliest surviving part of this tavern dating back to 1791. Patrick Henry and his wife lived at the tavern site in 1763, and George Washington and Lord Charles Cornwallis were quartered there during the American Revolution.
The Hanover Tavern is once again the home of Barksdale Theatre. The homecoming was Jan. 27, 2006, and it reopened with Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park." Changes in the newly refurbished theater are more practical than cosmetic. It's more accessible now, both inside and out. On-site dining is still available upstairs at Michelle's at Hanover Tavern.
