Dorey Park, 2999 Darbytown Road in the Varina area of eastern Henrico County. The 400-acre park is highlighted by the lighted soccer, softball and baseball fields that host many annual tournaments. It also has an attractive fishing pond, multiple picnic shelters, tennis courts, two equestrian rings, exercise and hiking trails, playgrounds, and a wooded 18-hole disc golf course.

The county has maintained a park on the site of the old Dorey Farm since 1984. The community center at Dorey Park—once the home of cow stalls and hayloft of the old Dorey Farm barn—opened in 1992. The exterior structure still looks like a barn.

The park is the site of the annual Kite Day Festival, held each March by the Richmond Air Force, a kite-flying club that flies there the first Sunday of every month (http://www.richmondairforce.com).

Several miles of mountain-bike trails were built at Dorey around 2000 with help of a state grant. The trails, designed for beginner and intermediate riders, are officially closed to, but see continued use. Henrico County officials have agreed to work with a private group of mountain bikers to restore and develop trails at Dorey Park for cyclists, joggers, and others. Trails at the park were wiped out by Hurricane Isabel in 2003.

Area map

The five-acre Dorey Lake is one of the original Urban Program lakes in the Richmond Metropolitan Area. The lake is owned and managed by the County of Henrico Recreation and Parks. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is responsible for managing the lake fisheries. To improve and maintain a successful, high-quality fishing program at the lake, Dorey Park Lake was placed into the Urban Program of the VDGIF at the inception of the program in 1993. Only channel catfish have been stocked in recent years. The average depth of the lake is about 3 to 5 feet within 20 feet of the shoreline. The deepest water (10 feet) is just off the end of the fishing pier.
