17th Street Farmers’ Market
The Times-Dispatch’s Jann Malone takes around to see what’s so great about shopping at a farmer’s market and hear from the people who produce the produce. Local farmers have come to sell their produce here since the 1700s. The open-air 17th Street Farmer’s Market underwent an $800,000 facelifting in 1986 and has been an important ingredient in the revitalization of Shockoe Bottom.

HISTORY
The open-air Farmer's Market underwent an $800,000 facelifting in 1986 and has been an important ingredient in the revitalization of Shockoe Bottom. With some of the city's best restaurants, a smattering of hip specialty shops, the rebirth along Tobacco Row, the resurrection of Main Street Station and construction of the Canal Walk, the market has to become a hub of activity.
The various markets and events held throughout the year at the 17th Street Farmer's Market attract a highly diverse crowd that spans all ages.
The site of the 17th Street Farmers' Market has been a public gathering place since 1737, and is one of the country's oldest public markets. When the Virginia General Assembly officially moved to Richmond in 1779, a "publik market" was established.
