The First Virginia Regiment participated in nearly every American conflict from the Revolutionary War to World War I. After the First World War, the regiment was reorganized, emerging as the 176th Infantry. The 176th Infantry eventually became the 276th Engineers, which has its headquarters in Richmond.

The First Virginia Regiment participated in nearly every American conflict from the Revolutionary War to World War I. After the First World War, the regiment was reorganized, emerging as the 176th Infantry. The 176th Infantry eventually became the 276th Engineers, which has its headquarters in Richmond.
Dedicated May 1, 1930, the and the artist is Ferruccio Legnaioli. The statue is a 7 foot high bronze standing figure of a colonial infantryman of 1754, the founding date of the Regiment. The figure is mounted on a pedestal 8 foot high which is lined with bronze plaques describing the history and service of the Regiment through seven wars.
